Flowers, Friendship, and the Beauty of Community

In a small town where everyone seems to know each other, stories of kindness and connection bloom just like flowers. This is especially true for Dorlene and Louise, two remarkable women whose lives are gently woven together by our services and the love of one local flower shop.

At 87, Dorlene faces challenges with mobility, yet her heart is full of warmth for her son, who owns the cherished Rose of Sharon flower shop. Dorlene signed up for our services with the hope of seeing him more often, as they both deal with physical limitations that make visiting difficult. With a bit of help from our volunteers, however, Dorlene and her son have found a way to stay close, sharing precious moments even when they’re apart.

In a beautiful gesture of gratitude, Dorlene’s son has decided to spread more love in our community by providing fresh floral arrangements for our seniors. Each Monday, he sends a new batch of these lovely blooms to brighten the days of people like Louise, a vibrant 82-year-old with a passion for quilting and a long career her as a retail manager.

Louise lives alone but remains connected to her family, especially her brother in Arroyo Grande. Maintaining her independence is important to her, and she continues to do just that with some support from our volunteers. We provide her with rides to her hairdresser and medical appointments, helping her stay both confident and well-cared-for. Though she relies on a walker, Louise remains self-sufficient, her spirit as colorful as the quilts she lovingly crafts and sells.

Recently, Louise received a floral arrangement from Rose of Sharon. For her, these flowers are much more than a bouquet—they’re a reminder of the kindness that surrounds her. And every time one of our volunteers delivers a similar arrangement to a senior, it becomes a small but meaningful connection, a bit of joy shared between neighbors.

We invite our volunteers to pick up a bouquet before heading out to visit clients. Every arrangement, thoughtfully prepared, is a simple way to bring warmth and happiness to someone’s day. If you’d like to share an arrangement with a client, just give us a call or stop by the office. Together, we’re building a community filled with kindness, where each gesture, large or small, makes a lasting difference.

Thank you for helping us spread a little extra love, one flower at a time.

In the heart of Santa Maria, nestled in Santa Barbara County, a local hero emerges from the shadows, quietly but profoundly impacting the lives of those around him. David C, a humble volunteer, embodies the spirit of service not only through his time in the Army but also through his ongoing commitment to support seniors and adults with disabilities in our community.

Recently, the Mayor of Santa Maria, Alice Patino, recognized David’s unwavering dedication by naming him one of the 12 Hometown Heroes at City Hall. Mayor Patino lauded his commitment to duty and acknowledged the sacrifices he made to protect our nation.

However, David’s heroism extends far beyond his military tenure. At a volunteer appreciation dinner held in December 2023, David was celebrated for his tireless efforts in supporting seniors and adults with disabilities. The room brimmed with gratitude as David was presented with a gold medal and a beautifully framed certificate of the prestigious Presidential Award.

As we venture into a new year, let David’s story serve as an inspiration to us all. It reminds us to give back to our communities and to recognize the everyday heroes who walk among us.
